Thailand Lifts Curfew: Entrepreneurs Immediately Less Productive.

To be honest, I have completely forgotten that there was a curfew in Thailand until it was lifted last night.  I've been in bed by 10:30pm and awake by 6:30am every day for this past month and have had the most productive days ever.  Even on weekends I would be in bed by 11 and wake up by 8.  Chiang Mai has been quite, and people have been productive.

In these past few weeks instead of staying out late drinking, people have been exercising, exploring new hobbies, and building location independant businesses.

Because of the curfew, everyone I know has:

  • Gotten in better shape
  • Gotten better sleep
  • Become healthier
  • Exercised more
  • Explored more
  • Played board games
  • Went out for nice dinners
  • Cut down on drinking
  • Read Books
  • Built Websites
  • Worked on their businesses

Curfew in Chiang Mai has been Officially Lifted!

What does this mean for Entrepreneurs?

Well immediately half of the people I know are hung over the very next morning.  Which means there will be a damper in both the projects they were planning on working on, waking up early enough to enjoy the day, and their entire mood and energy level throughout the weekend and possibly even carrying into the week.

What does this mean for Tourists and Teachers?

People will start back on the same path of having out at Small House Kafe and ending up at Zoe in Yellow Bar even though they swore they would never go again.  Drinks will flow and even though they were too much on a budget to spend 200 baht ($6US) on a nice dinner, they easily spend double that on a few fews or glasses of wine.  The same goes with their accommodations, they will live as cheaply as possible and think you're crazy for spending a penny more on your apartment yet they'll spend the same amount drinking every weekend.

I haven't had a late night out or a single alcoholic drink for almost an entire year.  The last time I was hung over was the morning on July 12th, 2013 and I vowed that I would never feel that way again.  It's up to you what you goals are.  If you enjoy going out and getting smashed, that's your choice.  But if you want to be successful, healthy, happy, and energetic, maybe a curfew, even a self imposed one wouldn't be a bad idea afterall.

Wishing everyone the best in their journeys and accomplishing their goals.

Johnny

  2. Great post, it's nice to see people enjoying Thailand for what it is really about and not just getting hammed

  3. This rings very true for me right now and how I have been thinking the past couple weeks. I cold turkeyed the booze in January and am feeling better than ever. I'm living in a town with great nightlife and have been turning down a lot of social opportunities because, well, I just want to spend as much of my lifetime illuminated by the light of the sun as possible. People always ask why I'm going home so early. I can still be social during the day, but I don't need to go out dancing until 4 AM anymore. It's tough though to explain how the marginal return (measured in fun and quality of relationship building) plummets after midnight and decreases exponentially per drink and per decibel of sound.

    1. Hey great job Lewis, keep it up and I promise turning down going to the bar or for drinks becomes easier and you start getting more invites for normal activities during the day.
