Two Weeks with ZERO Sales: Dropshipping Update

It's crazy...it's been exactly two weeks without a single sale for our new dropshipping store.  If you've been following along, ever since we launched it over Christmas, Larissa and my new store has been doing extremely well. We've had consistent sales every few days and I thought it was a home run. Her store has less customer service inquiries, higher margins, and more expensive/more profitable items for sale.

It was almost too good to be true. We've hardly but any time or effort into the store, and sales just kept coming in.  Then two weeks ago...things dried up. 14 full days passed without a single sale.

Our last sale was on:

May 1st, which we thought, okay, awesome, pay day! People are going to start purchasing again.  But then they didn't.  May 2nd-14th....nothing.

Larissa has been a bit stressed out as it's her primary source of income now that she's quit her teaching job. I've been stressed out because she's stressed out and honestly, ever since I've been working on building my new online course, I've been working 12 hours a day and haven't been even focusing on my own store, yet alone hers.

My personal store:

Since it's been around now for almost 2 years and I have great systems in place, it's pretty much automated and has been consistent even though I haven't had much time to pay attention to it.

Our new store:

Instead of just sitting on our butts and giving up, or hoping things will pick up by itself again. We decided to put in the work and make it happen. Here's what we did and what helped.

1. New Sales Channel

instead of just selling through google ads, we took the time to setup other sites (think amazon, facebook, houzz, bing, etc)

It worked. We made a $1,499.99 sale yesterday!

Paleo Ice Cream!

2. Contact Everyone

I noticed our traffic had gone down...maybe less people were searching for these products? Maybe it's because it's mother's day? Maybe it's may? Either way...I decided to find out why people weren't buying, so I installed an email collection popup form.

Larissa took the time to personally email every single person who didn't buy and asked why. I called my phone support guy and asked him what's been going on, and made sure he was on track.

I don't know exactly what it was, as it may have been a combination of it all, but today we woke up with $5,293.80 in sales.

Lessons Learned:

Sometimes life and business has it's ups and downs. What I learned from Grant Cardone is to be willing to put in 10X more effort when things get tough and you'll push through like a champ.

If you haven't already, I HIGHLY recommend everyone listen to the 10X Rule Audiobook, it's something that has kept me motivated when things have been getting tough and have allowed me to break through, keep my head up and pave success for tomorrow.

For those who want to start your own online business with a dropshipping store, I highly recommend Anton's course. It's what Larissa and I used to start both our stores.

Warm Regards,

Johnny

  1. Hey Johnny,

Glad your sales came back. Whenever my sales drop it feels just like a huge drop in my investment portfolio but if you stay the course it will come back.

I think it's important that you mentioned the non-Google shopping channels. The CPC on my PLAs has quickly jumped up to over a dollar per click on my store. Are the clicks that expensive on both of your stores? When would a PLA click be too expensive?

    Cheers Matt

    1. Hey Matt, that's solid advice, there are always ups and downs in the economy, stock market and sales. We don't have any clicks over 75 cents for any of our stores as I only shoot for 70% impression share maximum.

In my opinion a PLA click gets too expensive when you cost per conversion gets more than $15 for an item that makes you less than $100 in profit.

Glad you hear your sales sound like they are doing well though!

  2. Hi Johnny curious why you never tried to achieve traffic organically (seo). I'm getting around 15-20 visitors to date and have made 5k in sales since I've started 6 months ago. Thanks to you I've gone to new heights to drop shipping despite not putting my 100% into it. But I'm proud never to use a single paid ad from google just yet.

Good to hear you are doing well!

    1. Hey Phu, really glad to hear you make $5k from just organic search! That's awesome! The reason why I don't do off page SEO is because I have the mentality that if it works, I'm happy to pay for it.

To me organic sales are a bonus, (I get organic visitors with just on page SEO)

The core of my business is selling through paid ads. It's a win/win for the advertising company (google ads, etc) and me. I think of it as the abundance mentality. Instead of getting $5,000 in free organic traffic over 6 months, as long as the profit to advertising expenses are in my favor, i'd rather pay for ads and get $120,000 in sales over 6 months and would suggest you turn on your ads as Anton suggests in the course as you're missing out on a lot of sales.
