It's really insightful to hear it from your point of view. People don't have information about the success stories or solutions from other nations. People have seen things not working out too many times so, in the end of the day, most of them just stop trying to change anything.

You are totally right about the pessimism and "it's impossible so I'm not gonna even try" thinking and about the scarcity mentality. People went through many sociopolitical and economic shocks (collapse of USSR-1991, Economic crisis-1998, Orange Revolution-2004, Revolution of Dignity - 2014 and now new economic recession because of the war with Russia). Most of Ukrainians just want to feel safe, secure, striving for stability...

Also, people don't have this belief that they can change anything on the individual level or on the level of communities, historically all major decisions were made on top of the political vertical and they were communicated to the mass society. Just 26 years ago Ukraine's economy wasn't functioning based on the laws of the free market but it was planned like the economies of the other Soviet republics in the political center - Moscow.

It would be great to just forget about everything and start from the scratch but consciousness doesn't work like that. And even though me and my peers were born in the independent Ukraine, our parents went through USSR collapse and we all participated in the internal revolutions. On the societal level our collective consciousness is traumatised by these shocks and yes, that's why my nation has this victim consciousness.

This is my take on the situation in Ukraine. It's based on me being raised in this country and my family and friends still living in Ukraine.

Regarding the girl with the voice message, she's overacting, don't take it too seriously.

If you wan't to discuss this further, we can connect on facebook.

I'm glad that you have such diverse experiences in Ukraine, hopefully you got a new perspective on things and life and made you a better person :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04999792482591849623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4194848132778607550.post-76367355021049090142017-09-23T06:06:15.071-07:002017-09-23T06:06:15.071-07:00Hey Johnny,

This was one of the most incredibly insightful analyses of a culture and people I've read anywhere in a long time. Not because it was an academic masterpiece but because it was so heartfelt and raw and "real" for lack of a better word. Your boots on the ground perspective is better than any research paper or google search could ever provide. Your realization that people see things from different perspectives and thus we must force ourselves to see through the eyes of others as well really resonated with me too, because in this day and age where everyone believes their position is the correct one and everyone else is evil, it's exceedingly difficult to find people who are simply willing to listen and consider the viewpoints of others. And how many rich western travelers are willing to practice introspection and consider their own actions instead of simply blaming the locals? Practicing mindfulness when you travel is really great advice and you've made a very compelling argument to do so. This is long overdue from your email that you sent about your ending with Larissa, but I just wanted to thank you for your honesty and sincerity in everything you do. It really is appreciated. I've learned a great deal from you. You're living my dream, haha. Thanks again,

Steven~Steven M.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13666500865360121005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4194848132778607550.post-7004882752888833272017-09-22T19:05:59.034-07:002017-09-22T19:05:59.034-07:00What are your thoughts on Cambodia?

I know a lady who's from the Ukraine and I've enjoyed talking with her quite a bit. Her perspective is very down-to-earth and she has some refreshing opinions. Also Kyle Trouble has mentioned some of the things you have as well regarding the bureaucracy and inefficient ways of life there as well as many others.

It sounds like visiting the Ukraine is not for the "average" American traveler but those who are more flexible and can adapt to a culture and especially the way that Ukrainian girls appear cold but really aren't.

In the foreign lady introduction agencies, they don't cover these things you've elaborated on (or not sufficiently) so it's best to be prepared by reading a LEGIT and really informative article like this one you wrote. I have noticed that a lot of travel abroad-type articles, etc. don't give a realistic expectation of what a man will truly experience while there.

Excellent article and the voicemail section was especially touching. It really does give a lot of food for thought.

Thanks for a great post!!

PS: Appreciate you being on EcommCon today as a presenter!GetItGoinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06763680571822289515noreply@blogger.com
