28 Ways to Make Money While Traveling!

It's feels almost unreal, but I've been traveling full time now for almost 10 years! I first left California in 2007 to go on a 3 week vacation to Thailand and haven't lived a normal life back home since! A lot of people that hear that either wish they could do it themselves or are envious that I've done it. But in this post, I'm going to share with you 4 ways that you afford to travel by making money on the road! By the end of this post, you'll have the tools, knowledge and plan to be able to travel forever if you desired, or be able to simply work from anywhere in the world.

The four categories encompass everyone, whether you want to pursue your passions and hobbies while seeing the world, work and travel, teach english, build an online business, freelance, work remotely, or be a content creator. So whether you're wanting to be a digital nomad, location independent entrepreneur, remote worker, youtuber, or if you dream of making enough money from your instagram to support your travels, don't worry, I have you covered. Keep reading to find out how and choose the best path for you.

Work and Travel

I first started traveling not to make money or become rich, but simply because I wanted to see the world, and do cool things like live on remote islands, and explore. I always assumed I would have to save up a lot of money, or worse off, even wait until I retired to be able to live aboard for over a year doing an extended trip. Even though international backpacking is hugely popular to the rest of the world, for whatever reason, I hardly even heard of it and never knew of anyone personally who had done it while I lived in America.

The idea of taking a year off of school to travel seemed like a impossibility and even a gap year between graduating from university and starting work seemed like it would make my degree useless and ruin my chances at ever having a career. Luckily, now that I've been traveling for almost 10 years, I've now literally met hundreds of people from all around the world who were on gap year, backpacking, or work and travel trips.

It's to get started, you don't need to learn any special skills, and for little more than the cost of a flight and a bit of preplanning you can start right away. However, the downsides are, you won't be making much, if any money while traveling and you'll mainly be doing it to cover basic expenses while traveling and seeing the world. You can learn more and get started yourself with one of these resources.

  1. Work and travel as a scuba divemaster.
  2. Join an international exchange to teach english or au pair.
  3. Work on a cruise ship
  4. Join the peace corps
  5. Go to Australia to pick fruit
  6. Live and learn on organic farms
  7. Train and fight Muay Thai

Freelance or Work Remotely

Some of you might be thinking, "I would have loved to have done that when I was 18-25, but the thought of sharing a room with other crew or staff members or living cheaply in general is no longer for me. You'd rather work in a coworking space or coffee shop and see the world that way. Well good news, being a digital nomad is easier than it ever was before. There are tons of remote workers and people making money as freelancers around the world.

More and more companies are allowing their employees to work remotely, and more would be employees choose instead to be freelancers instead to maintain freedom to work anywhere and the control of their own time. Here are some resources on how to freelance or work remotely.

  1. Find freelance jobs on UpWork
  2. Find a new job that allows Remote Working
  3. Create gigs and make money using Fiverr
  4. Listen to other people's stories on Remote Working
  5. Get started with Freelancing

Start an Online Business

Even though I really enjoyed my time living the good life on the cheap as I wrote about in my first book 12 weeks in Thailand, I eventually got tired of it and wanted to have enough money to be able to buy a the latest iPhone when it came out, afford the new Macbook, and to be able to travel to more expensive places like Europe for the summer.

So in 2013, I started looking for ways to become a location independent entrepreneur and build an online business for myself. In the years since then, I've not only make more money per year than I did working my 9-5 corporate job back in California, but I've also met thousands of other digital nomads and small business owners who have done the same. Here are some of the online businesses that have worked for me and that I recomend.

  1. Learn how to Publish books on Kindle
  2. Learn how to Start a Dropshipping Store
  3. Learn how to Sell Products with Amazon FBA
  4. Learn how to Sell Products on eBay
  5. Become a Startup Founder
  6. Launch a product on Kickstarter
  7. Flip websites and Physical Products

Paid Content Creator

A lot of people dream about being able to travel and make money as a Youtuber, travel blogger or instagram star, and for good reason. It allows you to follow your passions and do what you love while earning money from it. A lot of people don't' realize but information is valuable and being able to share it through photos, videos, writing, blogging or creating online courses can make you a lot of money while you do what you love.

Even though I really enjoyed building online businesses that sold physical products and make the majority of my money from the past couple of years building and running dropshipping stores, I've always created content on the side, even before I ever got paid for it. I enjoyed doing it as a hobby and have been creating videos for youtube, blogging and uploading photos ever since I started traveling. If anything, my only two regrets is not doing more of it, and not learning how to monetize it sooner. Watch this video below where I show you how to make money as a travel blogger.

  1. Learn how to start and make money blogging
  2. Create videos as a professional Youtuber
  3. Grow a following to your instagram and take sponsored posts
  4. Become a professional photographer
  5. Start and grow a podcast like Travel Like a Boss
  6. Learn how to monetize your online audience
